Filmmaker Chloé Zhao said stories should not be dismissed simply because they are not regarded as high art, defending comic-book movies in remarks reported by Variety Film. Zhao said that as a child she had hoped to become a manga artist rather than a director. She said her drawing was not good enough to meet that standard, a memory she shared with a laugh.
