Zoe Kazan Explains Her Choices in Adapting "East of Eden" for Netflix

Zoe Kazan created Netflix's series adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel "East of Eden," and she has explained the choices behind it. She built the series around love and the bond between brothers. She also took a fresh look at Cathy Ames, one of the novel's characters. Kazan described how she changed the book for television while staying faithful to Steinbeck's work. Her account focuses on the decisions behind the series: what to keep at its center, how to read a familiar character anew, and how to turn a novel into episodes for a streaming audience.
