The U.S. Navy has picked Boeing to develop the F/A-XX, the fighter it plans to fly from its aircraft carriers. The award is valued at more than $20 billion. Most owners will never fly an airframe built to catch a wire at sea, but they will notice when an American manufacturer wins the right to design one. This is a development award, so it pays for the engineering and testing that come before any production run.
