Designers are treating the dining room as the one room in the American house where color gets to take chances. It is a space used for a few hours at a time, usually by lamplight or candlelight, which makes it more forgiving of a saturated wall than a kitchen or a living room ever could be. That has made it, by design consensus, the place to experiment.
