Fernando Mastrangelo Turns Material Into a Map of Belonging at Cristina Grajales
Fernando Mastrangelo, the artist and designer who works out of New York, has opened a solo show called "Territories" at Cristina Grajales Gallery. The pieces carry forward the materials that have become his trademark, and put them to work on a bigger subject: geopolitics, and the question of where a person belongs. The order of experience matters here. A visitor is meant to be taken first by the surface and the substance, and only afterward by the unease underneath them. For a publication that follows houses and the objects that fill them, that is exactly the kind of work worth standing in front of: made by hand, built from real material, and carrying an idea heavier than its finish suggests. No prices are on the record for the show, and none will be guessed at here.
