Katonah Becomes the Address for One of the Country's Largest Collections of Contemporary Indigenous Art
Northern Westchester has a new public destination. A collection of contemporary Indigenous art, described as among the largest of its kind, is being given a permanent public home in Katonah, New York. For a village known to our readers chiefly for its stone walls, its train line and its quiet acreage, that is a considerable addition to the cultural map. The work released with the announcement is Stick Seed, a 2022 piece by the artist Emmi Whitehorse, which gives some sense of the register of what is arriving. Elsewhere on the same wire, Neue Galerie in New York will reopen its galleries with an exhibition marking its twenty-fifth anniversary. And the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has announced an endowment of five million dollars dedicated to women artists. No sale price attaches to any of it, and none should: these are gifts to the public, not to the market.
