A Furniture Maker's Raw Materials, Reworked as Art for the Wall
Chellis Baird has made a series of wall-hung sculptures using materials supplied by the furniture maker American Leather. The pieces bring together textile, timber, animal hide and metal, the same stock the company uses to build its furniture. For collectors who follow design, this is a familiar crossing: materials meant for the showroom become one-of-a-kind objects meant to be looked at. The pieces were made to hang on a wall rather than sit on the floor, so the hide and cloth are shaped for the eye instead of upholstered for a seat.
