Forty-One Starts Later, a Tapit Son Starts Over With Kathleen Nathan
Portos, a son of Tapit, comes to the Thoroughbred Makeover with one of the longer résumés in the field. He ran 41 times over seven seasons, for six trainers, at 11 different racetracks. He finished first, second or third in 19 of those races, nearly half of everything he ran. Very few horses hold up that long, and his record shows how sound and willing he was. Kathleen Nathan is the rider who brings him to the Makeover, and it is her second trip to the event. The Makeover is where a racehorse is judged on what he can learn next, and few horses arrive there with more racing behind them. Portos earned his place on the track a few furlongs at a time, and now he has a chance to show what else he can do.
