Two Fillies Out of the Gallant Bloom Head This Week's Speed Table
The week's ranking of the fastest fillies belongs, at the top, to the Grade II Gallant Bloom Stakes. The race had been pushed back a week, and when it was finally run, it produced the two fillies who sit first and second on the list for the week of September 28 through October 4. A delayed race is often a forgotten one, and this one instead delivered the best pair of the week. At the other end of the table, sixth place went to Egyptian Mau, a South African-bred filly who ran at Belmont on October 1. She finished fifth in the Grade III Belmont Turf Sprint Stakes, a six-furlong dash on the grass. A fifth-place finish rarely earns a mention in a speed ranking, and that she earned one says something about the pace she held over the turf course at Elmont.
