The Boarding-School Mean Girls Get a Broadway Address
"School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play" has moved up to Broadway, with September 28 set as its date at the Samuel J Friedman Theatre. The play began off-Broadway in 2017, so this is a return, and New York audiences get to see the same schoolgirls on a bigger stage. At its heart is a spirited group of girls at a boarding school, which is a more particular setting than the familiar cafeteria-and-locker version of the mean-girl story. The credit belongs to Jocelyn Bioh and Whitney White, who are named as its makers and who set out to build another kind of mean girl. For a desk that keeps careful records of who wore what and where, a play about girls sizing each other up and ranking one another feels close to home. The date, the house and the title are all settled, and Broadway has one more reason to buy a ticket this fall.
