The stands at this year's U.S. Open have turned into their own kind of showcase, with two shoe stories playing out side by side: the thong sandal holding on to summer, and the fall-ready shoe getting an early debut. Mariah the Scientist, Yung Miami and Sophia Bush were among those spotted with footwear doing as much work as any outfit above the ankle. Together the looks read less like a single trend than a wardrobe in transition, bare-toed for the late heat and sturdier underfoot for the season just arriving.
