The Gold Is Already Sitting in Everyone's Jewelry Box
A new industry coalition, the Watch and Jewellery Initiative 2030, has done the math on all those pieces gathering dust in drawers and safes worldwide: put together, they hold roughly ten years' worth of the gold the industry would otherwise need to mine. Recirculating those unworn watches and jewels, the group says, could trim the industry's emissions by as much as 30 percent. It's also a hedge — brands leaning on existing gold and silver rather than new supply are less exposed when those metals swing in price. Not a bad case for finally taking grandmother's rings out of the safe deposit box.
