At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna went up to collect Artist of the Year and used the moment to look back at a heel that came off 42 years earlier. The shoe went missing during her 1984 performance of "Like a Virgin," a slip she said she was warned would finish her career. It didn't, and this year she came back to the stage as the night's honoree to say so. For this appearance she chose plain black pumps with no novelty and nothing loose. An archive that files looks by designer, year and occasion rarely gets a pair of entries this neat: the same performer, two dates, and a shoe in both. The 1984 stiletto is the one people remember.
