Plywood, Lego, and a Very Serious Case for Marge Simpson's Wardrobe

New York artist Tom Sachs has built a full-scale Chanel boutique out of nothing but plywood and Lego bricks, then filled it with re-created wardrobes belonging to Elizabeth Taylor, Olivia Rodrigo and Marge Simpson. Rendered in the same blunt, blocky materials, the three looks lose their usual context — old Hollywood glamour, current pop stardom, cartoon send-up — and sit side by side as equals. Stripped of fabric and reduced to plywood and studs, each ensemble reads less like costume and more like argument, exactly the kind of art-and-social-commentary Sachs is going for. It is a strange, deliberate leveling: a screen legend, a Gen Z pop star and a sitcom mom, all judged by the same handmade yardstick.
