Ron Howard Turns His Lens on Richard Avedon's Bazaar Beginnings
Richard Avedon's apprentice years at Harper's Bazaar are getting two tributes at once: a new book, and a documentary on the way from director Ron Howard. Both look at the magazine as the place where the photographer worked out how he saw things, before the rest of us learned to see fashion through his pictures. It's a fitting place to start. For anyone who reads a fashion photograph by its designer, its year and its occasion, the question of how a way of seeing gets made is the archive's own question. A book to keep and a film to watch are a good pair for it, and both give the pages where it began their proper credit.
