Twenty-Five Years On, Artists Space Gives Theresa Hak Kyung Cha the Whole Room
It has been a quarter century since anyone mounted a full survey of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's career, and Artists Space has now ended that wait with "Multiple Offerings." Cha's work never settled into a single category, and the exhibition treats that as its subject. Rather than force her into one discipline, it lays out the threads that run through her practice: words and speech, displacement from home, what memory holds on to, and the history of Korea. The show doesn't stop at hanging the pieces. It reads them closely and helps the visitor do the same. At a title that files every look by designer, year and occasion, we know the pleasure of a careful annotation, and this one is on the walls. Note the name of the exhibition and the institution, because this is the occasion.
