Zac Posen Dresses Robbins's 1958 "Opus Jazz" in Denim and Sneakers for Miami City Ballet
Miami City Ballet is restaging Jerome Robbins's "Opus Jazz," and Zac Posen of GapStudio is designing new costumes for it. The choreography dates to 1958. Posen's version puts the dancers in denim and sneakers, clothes most of the audience could have worn to the theater. The ballet is part of Gonzalo Garcia's first season at the company, the first one he has programmed from start to finish. That makes it one of the clearest early signs of what his Miami City Ballet will look like. For an archive like ours, it's a pleasing entry: a 1958 work, a named designer and wardrobe items as everyday as jeans and sneakers. Robbins wrote the dances, and Posen chose what the company will wear while dancing them.
