Min Jin Lee's new novel is set in the Korean for-profit learning centers where families pay for extra hours of study, and here those centers are on American soil. In a new conversation, Lee talks about what first drew her to these tutoring academies as a subject for fiction. She also argues that education should be taken out of the political arena. For readers planning what to read this season, her book asks what schooling can really promise a child.
