The $12 Million Question Every Owner Has Asked: Will the Drone See Me?
The Federal Aviation Administration has put $12 million into research on drones that fly beyond their operator's line of sight. Owners will mostly care about where that money is going. Part of it goes to the problem pilots have been raising at the FBO counter for years: making sure an uncrewed aircraft can spot a crewed one and get out of its way. The rest pays for satellite links to keep these machines connected out of range of the ground, and for software that manages the traffic they will add to the sky. For anyone who departs Naples, Aspen or the East End on a VFR morning, these are practical questions about shared airspace, and the money is aimed at them.
