A Duplex Hiding Above Third Avenue

The shingled cottage that sits five stories above the Kiehl's building on Third Avenue has long read as a stray mountain cabin, dropped onto an East Village rooftop with a view over the low-rise blocks below. Seen from the street, it looks complete in itself, the kind of one-room retreat that could exist nowhere but a rooftop. It isn't one room. The cottage is only the top half of a duplex, with a full lower level built in below the roofline that the street view never lets on.
