Green-Wood's Grounds Host a Revolutionary Roll Call

Dozens of costumed interpreters and historians converged this week on Green-Wood Cemetery, the 478-acre Brooklyn landscape whose hills and monuments overlook New York Harbor, for a commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn. The gathering marked the largest single engagement of the Revolutionary War, fought across the same ridgelines the cemetery now occupies. Green-Wood has long doubled as both burial ground and public park, its Gothic gates and rolling terrain drawing visitors well beyond those paying respects to the dead. For an afternoon, the grounds became a living tableau of the republic's earliest defense of the city it would grow to define.
