In the West Village, the Rental Building Becomes the House

Townhouses are scarce this year in the West Village, and buyers who want one are no longer waiting for a listing that may not come. Instead, they are acquiring entire rental apartment buildings and converting them into single homes, floor by floor, until the building reads as one address rather than many. It is a workaround shaped by the neighborhood's tight supply, not a new building type so much as an old one put to new use. On these blocks, where scale has always mattered more than square footage, that conversion is quietly becoming its own kind of arrival.
