A painting by Gertrude Abercrombie, picked up at an estate sale for $30, is now estimated to bring as much as $250,000. The distance between those two numbers says less about a lucky afternoon than about where her market has gone. Since 2018, a run of gallery and museum shows has returned her work to collectors' attention, and prices have followed. It is the kind of find estate sales are supposed to produce, and so rarely do.
