At the Guggenheim, an Archive Built for America's 250th

Taryn Simon has turned the Guggenheim's rotunda into a working archive ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary, filling it with roughly 1,000 photographs and thousands more words of accompanying text. The show is a rare instance of a major institution marking the milestone through art rather than ceremony. Rather than presenting its documents as settled fact, the installation treats the very notion of truth as something to be taken apart and examined.
