Willa Cather spent her childhood in Nebraska in the late nineteenth century, on prairie land that had only recently been settled. Her neighbors were largely immigrant families, newly arrived and building homesteads from open ground. That landscape and the people making their lives on it became the material she would carry into her fiction for decades to come.
