Pittsburgh's Case for Being Pop Art's Birthplace

Andy Warhol was born and raised in Pittsburgh before becoming the artist most closely associated with defining the Pop Art movement itself. That origin sits at odds with the New York mythology that usually surrounds him, yet it's the starting point most accounts of his career return to. For a movement so bound up with postwar American art and the collections that grew out of it, the reminder that it began in a Pennsylvania industrial city is worth holding onto.
