The Sculptor Who Gave Wounded Soldiers Their Faces Back

World War I's trench fighting produced facial and head wounds on a scale medicine of the day had never faced. Anna Coleman Ladd, a portrait sculptor by training, turned that same skill toward restoration, modeling masks that returned a recognizable likeness to men the war had disfigured. Her studio work is now remembered as one of the earliest steps toward what became modern plastic surgery.
