The Sculptor Who Works Without Stone

Anthony McCall makes sculpture from a material no chisel can touch: light itself. His installations began with cones of haze-thickened beams, given enough weight and volume by fog that viewers could walk through them like solid form. His newer pieces set that light in motion, rotating beams built on the geometry of drone flight, so the work now traces its shapes through space rather than holding them still. Seen together, the two bodies of work read as one idea carried through, from fixed cone to turning arc, proof that sculpture needs no more than air and light to hold its shape.
