Keeneland Readies for Its Fourth Breeders' Cup
The Breeders' Cup World Championships are returning to Keeneland Racecourse, and Lexington, Kentucky is getting ready to receive them. This will be the forty-third running of the championships, and the fourth that Keeneland has staged. The event's signature purple will soon be everywhere in a city that calls itself the Horse Capital of the World, and the title is earned rather than claimed. Few places on earth are so thoroughly given over to the thoroughbred, from the farms on the edge of town to the sales pavilion at the track itself. For readers of this publication, that is the appeal of a Keeneland Cup: the racing arrives in the one American setting where the whole industry, breeders, consignors, trainers and buyers alike, is already at home. A visitor standing at the rail will be a short drive from the paddocks where many of the entrants were foaled. The preparations now underway are the start of that homecoming.
