A $20 Million Record That Would Barely Clear the Shortlist on Worth Avenue
A Russian Hill penthouse once owned by an heir to the Getty Oil fortune is back on the market in San Francisco, asking $20 million. The unit has history behind that number: in 1998, broadcasting tycoon Charlton Buckley bought it for a sum that set a price record for the city at the time. Read from Palm Beach or Naples, where that figure buys a comfortable house rather than a headline, it's a useful reminder that "record-setting" is a very local word. San Francisco keeps its own scoreboard, and this penthouse, oil money and broadcasting money both attached to its deed, still tops it. Down here we'd just call it a nice starting point.
