Flying has published a practical guide to the FAA's written exam for the private certificate. It covers how to study for it, how to find a place to take it, and how to get through it on test day. The exam is taken on a computer, and it comes before any certificate does, whatever is waiting in the hangar. If you've spent years in the back of your own airplane and are now looking at the left seat, this is the first step, and you take it at a desk rather than in the pattern.

With reporting from Flying.
