A Car With Thrusters, and a Few Seconds Off the Ground
A prototype of the next Tesla Roadster has demonstrated a cold-gas propulsion system that briefly lifted the car clear of the pavement and let it maneuver in the air. The lift comes from compressed air rather than any wing or rotor, so what the demonstration showed is a ballistic hop with some attitude control, not sustained flight. For anyone who already keeps a Part 91 airplane in the hangar, the interesting question is not whether a car can leave the ground but what the FAA will eventually call a road vehicle that does. For now it is a prototype and a demonstration, nothing more.
