The Panel, Not the Windshield, Flies the Airplane on a Moonless Night

On a night with no moon, the horizon disappears, and there is nothing outside the windscreen worth looking at. What's left is the panel — attitude, airspeed, heading — and the discipline to trust those readings over whatever the inner ear is telling you. It's the scenario that separates a current instrument rating from real instrument competence, and the reason an autopilot on an owner-flown airplane is a discipline tool, not a convenience. The pilots who find out which they have are the ones flying themselves, not the ones in back.
