Every Pound Has a Price: Overlanding Gear Slows a Ranger Raptor

Owners eyeing an overland build on a performance truck now have a data point worth weighing. Car and Driver's long-term Ford Ranger Raptor, outfitted with the bulky gear that overlanding demands, picked up 446 pounds along the way — and gave back speed for it. The truck's acceleration slowed, and its highway fuel economy dropped as well, the extra mass working against the very engineering that made the Raptor quick in the first place. It is the kind of tradeoff any owner adding roof racks, recovery gear, or long-range fuel capacity to a performance pickup should expect to pay.
