GM's Newest Diesel Carries a Piece of an Engine That Never Reached Showrooms

General Motors has introduced an 8.3-liter diesel engine that incorporates technology developed for a smaller, more advanced Duramax variant nearly two decades ago. That earlier engine, developed for pickups in the late 2000s, was shelved when the recession forced GM to pull back on the program before it reached production. Some of its engineering has now found a home in the new 8.3-liter unit, giving the canceled project a second life under the hood rather than in a showroom.
