GM's Next Heavy-Duty Diesel Gets a Name: Mongoose

General Motors has given its next heavy-duty diesel a name that leaves no doubt about its target: Mongoose. The 8.3-liter engine is headed for GM's HD pickups, built to outmuscle Ford's 6.7-liter Power Stroke, known internally as Scorpion, which currently makes 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. Both nicknames make plain which rival each automaker had in mind when it set the target for its own engine. For HD pickup buyers who track horsepower and torque figures as closely as the badge on the tailgate, the matchup gives the segment a new number to watch.
