Beldame Leads the Week's Fastest Fillies, With Gallant Greta Sixth on the Turf

Thoroughbred Daily News has published its weekly list of the fastest fillies and mares by Beyer Speed Figure for September 21 through 27, and the Beldame Stakes accounts for the top two places. The list does not name the Beldame finishers or give their numbers. The race's standing is clear all the same: in a week of racing across the country, the two quickest performances by fillies and mares came from that one race. That's what you'd expect from a race built to draw the best of the division. Sixth on the list is Gallant Greta, who earned her place in the seventh race at Remington Park on September 27. That race was the Ricks Memorial Stakes, run at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf. She is the only grass runner the wire item names in a top six led by the Beldame. A Beyer measures how fast a horse actually ran, so her place on a national list rests on her own time in the Ricks Memorial.
