Mystik Bayou Breaks His Maiden at Belmont With an 88 Beyer
Mystik Bayou, a 2-year-old colt by a sire whose name was cut off in the report ("Wells…"), won his maiden race at Belmont on October 3. The race was run at a mile and a sixteenth. His Beyer Speed Figure for the win was 88. That is a strong number for a juvenile stretching out past a mile, and it earned him a place on the week's list of the quickest first-time winners covering September 28 through October 4. Horses from Godolphin and trainer Mike Stidham claimed the top two places on that list, which made for a strong week of maiden racing. For New York racing fans, the result belongs to the season's 2-year-olds at Belmont, where the colt has now gotten his first win.
