A 5.9-Carat Emerald, and 284 Stones to Keep It Company
A new high-jewelry set has arrived: a necklace and matching earrings named Victoria Falls, built around a single emerald of 5.9 carats. That green stone sits at the center of the necklace. Across both pieces there are 285 stones in all, which comes to about 100 carats. The emerald is just one of them, so 284 others surround it and lead the eye back to it. That proportion is the part to look at. A hundred carats could easily turn into a blur, but here it is arranged so that a single stone of under six carats still holds the center. The name points to water falling, and a set like this is about movement: the necklace on the collarbone, the earrings framing the face, the whole thing catching light as the wearer turns. On our coast, a reader can already guess where each town would take it. In Palm Beach it goes to the gala, in Naples to dinner at eight, and in Miami it shows up sometime after midnight. All three would be right, because a set this carefully made suits whatever room it walks into.
