Four Watches Named for Daytona Raise $49.5 Million, All of It for Charity
Four Daytona wristwatches, each the only one of its kind, have sold for $49.5 million combined, and none of that money stays with the sellers. Every dollar goes to two charities, the Federer Foundation and Re:wild. Floridians will notice the name on the dial first. The Daytona is named after our own stretch of hard-packed Atlantic sand, so a little of the credit arguably belongs to Volusia County. The arithmetic is worth a moment too: four watches averaging better than $12 million apiece is the kind of math usually reserved for waterfront parcels on Gordon Drive or the ocean side of South Ocean Boulevard. In Miami, the reaction will be to ask who bought them. In Palm Beach, people will quietly admire that the whole sum went to good causes. In Naples, the talk will turn to whether the bands can be adjusted for golf. All three cities would agree, though, that the best thing about this sale is where the money is going.
