Julia Child's Cambridge House Is for Sale at $6.5 Million, but the Kitchen Stays at the Smithsonian
A note to readers who spend the season between Worth Avenue and Fifth Avenue South: a house in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is now for sale for $6.5 million. It's the house where "The French Chef" began, the program that brought Julia Child's cooking into American living rooms. The one room everyone would want to see isn't part of the sale. Her kitchen is at the Smithsonian, so whoever buys the house gets the address and the history, and anyone who wants to see the stove will have to go to the museum like everybody else. In Miami that might count as a flaw. In Palm Beach and Naples, where people would rather have a good story than a new appliance, it probably doesn't. A house can be historic without its most famous room, and this one is, because a well-loved piece of American television got its start there. We'd guess more than one Gulf Coast dinner host is already looking at New England listings this morning.
