The Office Where F.W. Woolworth Worked Is Now an $18.5 Million Home
Most of the Palm Beach crowd who keep a place in New York want something north of Fifty-Ninth Street. This one sits downtown, and it comes with a story. F.W. Woolworth once kept his office here, and the room that held that office now forms part of an $18.5 million apartment. The home takes up an entire floor, which means no neighbor on the other side of the wall and no shared landing. It runs past 6,000 square feet, more room than a good many Naples houses sitting on actual land. The ceilings are fifteen feet high, tall enough that the windows feel like part of the architecture and not just a way to see out. The terra-cotta work is the original, made by hand in the era when an office was built to impress anyone who walked in for a meeting. Through those windows, downtown Manhattan spreads out in every direction. Anyone who has watched the Intracoastal from a Flagler Drive balcony knows the pleasure of a long view, and this is the vertical version of it.
