A Namesake Draws Its Own Cheering Section at Keeneland

· 1 min read

The horse called Coach Pope had a familiar face in the crowd at Keeneland: Mark Pope of the University of Kentucky, the man the horse is named for, came out to support it. It's a good Kentucky picture: a name the state knows well on the program, and the man himself at the Lexington track rooting for it. Expectations for the horse are already high. Plenty of horses are named for well-known people, but few of those people turn up trackside to cheer them on, and that's why this one is worth noting. For now the story is a horse carrying high hopes into one of the country's great racetracks, with its namesake there to watch.
